Giving
“Just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in
knowledge, in complete earnestness – see that you also excel
in the grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7
At New Life, we understand
that the topic of Church and money is quite sensitive and has
not always been positively handled. Therefore, the temptation
for churches (and believers) is to
not talk about it at all. But, money is necessary. More
importantly, the way we handle it…is a very spiritual matter
that God’s Word says lots and lots about! In fact, God speaks
more
about money than he does about love, prayer, or even faith!
It is our hope that the
F.A.Q.’s can be of help to you as you seek God’s will on this
issue.

Why Does God Want Me
to Give?
- Giving makes me
more like God – God is a giver!
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only
Son” John 3:16
- Giving draws me
closer to God – I care about the things He cares about!
“Where your treasure is, there your heart is also.”
Matthew 6:21
-
Giving is the antidote to materialism – it focuses us on
what matters most!
“Command those who are rich in this present world not
to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is
so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly
provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command
them to be generous and willing to share. In this way
they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” I
Timothy 6:17-18
-
Giving strengthens my faith – it tests my responses to
God!
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on
your own understanding…Honor the Lord by giving him the
first part of your income, and he will fill your barns
to overflowing.” Proverbs 3:5,9
-
Giving is an investment in eternity – giving ‘pays it
forward!’
“Give happily to those in need, and always be ready
to share whatever God has given to you. By doing this,
you will be storing up real treasure for yourselves in
heaven – it is the only safe investment for eternity.” I
Timothy 6:18-19 (LB)
-
Giving blesses me in return – we receive, every time we
give!
“A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others
will himself be refreshed.”
Proverbs 11:25
-
Giving makes me happy – it is better to give than to
receive!
“There is more happiness in giving than in
receiving.” Acts 20:35

What Does the Bible
Teach About Tithing?
A tithe - a tenth – 10% of my income - anything less than 10%
of my income is not a tithe.
An offering – anything I voluntarily give over and above the
basic tithe
Why
Should I tithe?
-
Because God commands it.
“A tenth of all you produce is the Lord’s and it is
holy.” Leviticus 27:10
-
Because Jesus commended it.
“Yes, you should tithe, and you shouldn’t
leave the more important things undone either.” Matthew
23:23
-
Because tithing demonstrates that God has first place in
my life.
“The purpose of tithing is to teach you to
always put God in first place in your life.”
Deut. 14:23 (LB)
-
Because tithing reminds me that everything was given to
me by God.
“Always remember that it is the Lord your God
who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” Deut. 8:18
-
Because tithing expresses my gratitude to God.
“How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to
me?” Psalm 116:12
“Each of you should bring a gift in proportion to the
way the Lord your God has blessed you.” Deut. 16:17
-
Because God says that refusing to tithe is stealing from
Him.
“God says, ‘Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing
me!’ But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ God says, ‘In
tithes and offerings…bring your whole tithe to my
house.”
Malachi 3:8-10
-
Because tithing gives God a chance to prove that He
exists and wants to bless you.
“Bring your whole tithe to My storehouse. Test
me in this,” says the Lord, “ and see if I will not
throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much
blessing that you won’t have room enough for it! I will
prevent pests from devouring your crops and the vines in
your fields will be protected from plagues.” Malachi
3:10
-
Because tithing proves that I really love God.
“If you love me, do what I command.” John 14:15
“…I want you to be leaders also in the spirit of
cheerful giving…. This is one way to prove that your
love is real, that it goes beyond mere words.” 2 Cor.
8:7b-8 (LB)

What/Where/When
Should I Tithe?
|
What
the first part of what I earn, not the
leftovers. At New Life, we believe that that means giving
our tithe based on our gross income not just our net. We
seek to give God the best of all we earn, not just all we
take home.
“Honor the Lord by giving him the first part of all
your income.” Prov. 3:9-10
Where
to my local church. At New Life we believe that
there are many worthy causes to support, but that the
tithe should be given to the local church where you
worship and are served. Love gifts and offerings, over and
above your tithe, may be given wherever the Lord directs.
“Bring you whole tithe to my storehouse (Temple)…”
Malachi 3:10
When
the first day of every week. At New Life we
believe that giving a tithe each Sunday gives you an
opportunity to place God at the head of your financial
world and to remind you of His Lordship and gracious
provision in your life.
“On the first day of every week, set aside some of what
you have earned and give it as an offering. Theamount
depends on how much the Lord has helped you to earn.” I
Cor. 16:2 (LB) |

What
Should Be My Attitude in Giving?
-
We are to give willingly.
“For if the willingness is there, your gift is
acceptable according to what you have, not according to
what you don’t have.” 2 Corinthians 9:12
“Each of you should give what he has decided in his
heart to give, not reluctantly or under pressure…” 2
Corinthians 9:7a
-
We are to give joyfully.
“..for God loves a cheerful giver!” 2 Corinthians
9:7b
-
We are to give generously.
“They gave as much as they were able and even
beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they
urgently pleaded with is for the privilege of sharing in
this service.” 2 Corinthians 8:3-4
-
We are to give expectantly.
“Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap
sparingly, and whoever sows generously will reap
generously.” 2 Corinthians 9:6
-
We should give personally and sacrificially.
"I cannot take what is yours and give it to the LORD.
I will not offer a burnt offering that has cost me
nothing!" 1 Chronicles 21:24-25 (NLT)
“Then a poor widow came and dropped in two pennies. He
called his disciples to him and said, "I assure you,
this poor widow has given more than all the others have
given. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but
she, poor as she is, has given everything she has."
Mark 12:42-44 (NLT)
-
We should give humbly.
"Take care! Don't do your good deeds publicly,
to be admired, because then you will lose the reward
from your Father in heaven. When you give a gift to
someone in need, don't shout about it as the hypocrites
do--blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to
call attention to their acts of charity! I assure you,
they have received all the reward they will ever get.
But when you give to someone, don't tell your left hand
what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in
secret, and your Father, who knows all secrets, will
reward you.” Matt 6:1-4 (NLT)

My Financial Goals:
We recognize that God is the owner of all we have and are. It
(and we) belongs to him. We are called to be faithful stewards
and wise investors of His resources. And, He will call us
to accountability for our use of those resources. It is our
goal, at New Life, to continually strive to steward those
resources well…and…to progressively release more and more of
those
resources for His use as we serve the needs of the poor, the
seeking, and our Christian community!
Our
financial goals center around the principle of 10-10-80.
|
We
give 10%
back to the Lord in the form of a tithe.
We save 10%
for ourselves and our families in long-term savings and
emergency resources.
We spend 80%
we wisely spend the rest for our current
living expenses. |

Steps to
the Full Tithe
At New Life we recommend that each believer, as a starting
place of faith, commit to bringing the full tithe (10%) to the
Lord! However, we also recognize that sometimes life choices
and
poor financial choices do not always permit that step all at
once. Therefore, we have created the following tool to help
you make concrete steps toward the full tithe. |
- Calculate your weekly tithe by
dividing your gross annual income by 52 weeks.
Multiple by .10 for your full weekly tithe amount.
$__________ divided by 52 = _______ X .10 = __________
(full weekly tithe)
- Write full 10% tithing goal on line A
____________(line A)
- Write current giving on line
B____________(line B)
- Calculate the difference between line
A & B and record on line C__________(line C)
- Divide line C by 4 and record on line
D____________(line D)
- Add Line B (current gift to Line D and record on
line E. ________ by Feb. 2006
- Add line D to line E and record on line F. ________
(line F) by May 2006
- Add line D to line F and record to line G. ________
(line G) by August 2006
- Add line D to line G and record on line H.
________(line H) by Dec. 2006
|
If you follow these simple steps, you will
be giving God your full tithe in just one year!!
